(Rome)
After the division of the Roman Empire in the 4th century AD, Asia Minor became part of the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire, the capital of which was Constantinople (present-day Ýstanbul), or Byzantium, located on the European side of the Bosporus, just across from the west coast of Anatolia.

dragon gave him his power
And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. -- Rev 13:2 (KJV)

Roman Standard
The dragon at one time was the Roman Standard, as is represented by the engraving from Montfaucon. Ammianus Marcellinus described the standard as "The dragon was covered with purple cloth and fastened to the end of a pike gilt and adorned with precious stones. It opened its wide throat , and the wind blew through it; and it hissed as if in a rage, with its tail floating in several folds through the air".
This ensign of the dragon only came into use at the close of the second century of the Christian era and became commonly used in Rome during the third century. Prior to that, which is diuring the time of the republic and earlier, Rome's standard was that of the eagle.
Constantine the Great
Constantinople became a capital of the Roman Empire in 330 after Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, refounded the city of Byzantium and named it after himself. Only gradually did it develop into the true capital of the eastern Roman provinces—those areas of the empire in southeastern Europe, southwestern Asia, and the northeast corner of Africa, which included the present-day countries of the Balkan Peninsula, and Syria, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt, and the eastern part of Libya. Scholars have called the empire Byzantine after the ancient name of its capital, Byzantium, or the Eastern Roman Empire, but to contemporaries and in official terminology of the time, it was simply Roman, and its subjects were Romans (Rhomaioi).
Its predominant language was Greek, although some of its subjects spoke Latin, Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, and other local languages during its long (330-1453) history. Its emperors regarded the one-time geographical limits of the Roman Empire as theirs, and they looked to Rome for their traditions, symbols, and institutions. The empire, ruled by an emperor (basileus) without any formal constitution, slowly formed a synthesis of late Roman institutions, orthodox Christianity, and Greek language and culture.
The Frankish king Charlemagne was a devout Catholic who maintained a close relationship with the papacy throughout his life. In 772, when Pope Adrian I was threatened by invaders, the king rushed to Rome to provide assistance. Shown here, the pope asks Charlemagne for help at a meeting near Rome.
After receiving an appeal from Pope Adrian I for help resisting the Lombards in northern Italy, Frankish king Charlemagne invaded Italy and captured the Lombard capital of Pavia. In 800 he was crowned king Emperor of the Romans.

The Fifth Kingdom
Historically, Rome possessed Jerusalem until the Persian army conquered Jerusalem, destroying most of the Churches, and expelling all the Jews (614 A.D.). That which followed was the surrender of the Byzantine Jerusalem to Caliph Umar. From that time forward, lasting until the time of the crusades, Jerusalem was ruled by the Muslims. The fifth kingdom or head of John's beast must then be identified as the Muslim kingdom.
Umar I second caliph of Sunnite orthodox Islam. Next to the prophet Muhammad, Umar was the chief architect of the Islamic state. With Abu Bakr, the first Islamic caliph, Umar exercised a decisive influence on Muhammad’s policies. After Abu Bakr died, Umar reigned from 634 to 644.
Under his leadership, the first great expansion of Islam outside of Arabia took place. Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and the northern part of Mesopotamia became Islamic territories, and the armies of the Persian Empire were routed several times. Umar, aided by brilliant field generals, conducted military campaigns against the two leading empires of his time, the Sassanid Persians in Iran and Iraq and the Byzantines in Syria and Egypt.

Dome of the Rock
The oldest extant Islamic structure stands on the sacred rock in Jerusalem where the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have ascended to heaven.
Jerusalem was ruled by the Muslims and the Jews were re-admitted back into Jerusalem shortly after the takeover. The Muslims allowed the Jews to build synagogues and religious schools throughout their reign.
In 638, the city came under Muslim control following conquest by Caliph Umar I. The Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque were soon constructed on the Temple Mount, with the Dome of the Rock standing on the site of the First and Second Temples.
The famous Dome of the Rock, an octagonal shrine (not a mosque) was completed early on around 691 A.D. This shrine was erected upon the rock to protect the holy rock beneath, which according to tradition, is the very place where Abraham was prepared to offer up Ishmael (Isaac) as a sacrifice to Yahweh (Gen. 22:1-19), the threshing floor of Araunah where David built an altar (2 Sam. 24:14-25), and finally the very place which Mohammed ascended to heaven on the Buraq.

Iron mixed with Clay

(Islam Empire 632, 656, 733)
The Seljuks, a Turkish dynasty, ruled Jerusalem harshly in the 11th century and continued to expand, especially toward Europe.
During the 11th century Asia Minor was invaded by the Seljuk Turks, and the eastern part of the region became predominantly Turkish in character.
The reign of the the Turkish empires:
The Seljuks, Turkish dynasty prominent in the Middle East during the 11th and 12th centuries. Originally a clan belonging to the Oghuz, a Turkmen tribe of Central Asia, they were converted to Islam in the 10th century and established themselves in the Iranian province of Khorâsân in the early 11th century. In the period between 1040 and 1055, their chief, Togrul Beg, conquered most of Iran and Iraq and made himself protector of the caliph of Baghdâd, spiritual leader of the Sunni (orthodox) Muslims.
Iron was the Holy Roman Empire
Clay was the Holy Moslem Empire
In response to this expansion and Turkish control of places sacred to Christianity, Pope Urban II called the first of the Crusades, asking Christians to travel to the Middle East and fight to reclaim the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem.
Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders under Godfrey of Bouillon in 1099.
So we see that the Muslim reign over Jerusalem was interrupted by a century of ruler ship by the Crusaders following a five week siege and massacres of both Jews and Muslims by the Christian Church under Godfrey de Bouillon in 1099 A.D.

Jerusalem then became the Capital of the Crusader kingdom called the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem until 1191. The Crusaders renamed the Dome of the Rock to Templum Domini. It was converted into a Christian Church, after affixing a cross upon its dome. This short period seems to represent a little iron mixed in with the clay.
The Crusaders slaughtered many of the Muslim and Jewish residents and ruled with great cruelty until Saladin captured the city again for the Muslims in 1187.
Saladin (1138-1193), Muslim leader, who recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders.
Born in Tikrît, Iraq, Saladin, as he is known in the West, was a Kurd. Between 1164 and 1169 he distinguished himself in three expeditions sent by Nur ad-Din to aid the decadent Fatimid rulers of Egypt against attacks by the Christian Crusaders based in Palestine. In 1169 he was made commander in chief of the Syrian army and vizier of Egypt.
Saladin expanded his power in Syria and northern Mesopotamia, and in 1187 he invaded the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem, defeated the Christians at Hittin in Galilee (July 4), and captured Jerusalem the following October.
Richard I of England
In 1192 Saladin concluded an armistice agreement with King Richard I of England that allowed the Crusaders to reconstitute their kingdom along the Palestinian-Syrian coast but left Jerusalem in Muslim hands.

Dome of the Rock
So in 1187 A.D., the Crusaders surrendered Jerusalem back to Muslim control to general Saladin, founder of the Ayyubid dynasty.

Toes Of Clay and Iron
Represents a Sixth kingdom
And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of
potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be
divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the
iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry
clay.
And as the toes of the feet were part of iron,
and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong,
and partly broken.

The Roman head is the German head of the beast and authority seat.
He has Satan’s power and authority.
Being crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman empire by the pope forever shifted power, seat, and authority of the Roman Emperor to the Germans. His empire was laster divided becomming France and Germany. The title of the emperor of the Romans or the Holy Roman Empire thereafter remained with the German kings.

Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte was the greatest military genius of the 19th century. He conquered most of Western Europe and Egypt for France, while instituting reforms in these new territories aimed at guaranteeing civil liberties and improving the quality of life. He crowned himself emperor of France in 1804 and introduced reforms intended to unify the revolution-fractured nation.
In 1806, to compensate the western German states for their losses, Napoleon reorganized them into the Confederation of the Rhine, at the same time greatly reducing their number. The 17 members of the confederation broke away from the Austrian Holy Roman Empire, effectively dissolving it.[1]
On July 12, 1806, 16 German princes gathered in Paris and formally signed an act of confederation. The act dissolved their connection with the Holy Roman Empire and, in effect, allied them to France as satellites. As a result, Francis II, who had proclaimed himself emperor of Austria in 1804 when he foresaw the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, resigned his title of Holy Roman emperor, and the empire came to an end.

First judgement began with Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian Captivity (606 B.C.)
According to prophecy, the final Babylonian kingdom would be postponed to allow for the seven more times to pass over
Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great. -- Dan 4:10 (KJV)
The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth: -- Dan 4:11 (KJV)
The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it. -- Dan 4:12 (KJV)
I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; -- Dan 4:13 (KJV)
He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches: -- Dan 4:14 (KJV)
Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: -- Dan 4:15 (KJV)
Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him: and let seven times pass over him. -- Dan 4:16 (KJV)
This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men. -- Dan 4:17 (KJV)
This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee. -- Dan 4:18 (KJV)
Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. -- Dan 4:19 (KJV)
The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; -- Dan 4:20 (KJV)
Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation: -- Dan 4:21 (KJV)
It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. -- Dan 4:22 (KJV)
And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him; -- Dan 4:23 (KJV)
This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king: -- Dan 4:24 (KJV)
That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. -- Dan 4:25 (KJV)
And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule. -- Dan 4:26 (KJV)

The great god, once stripped of his power and cut down almost to the ground will one day spring back to life. Here we see the great serpent being the symbol of resurrection as is all to common with the image of Aesculapius who is generally represented with a stick or branch of a tree at his side having a serpent twining around it. The tree is to once again sprout back to new life. It is very common throughout the myths of the world and their religions.
