Mystery, Babylon The Great

Who or what is mystery Babylon ?

And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. -- Rev 17:5 (KJV)

And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. -- Rev 17:18 (KJV)

Both are clothed in the same garment . The identity is the same.

And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: -- Rev 17:4 (KJV)

Is Babylon the creation of Nebuchadnezzar ?

Nimrod the mighty hunter was the original builder of the city of Babylon

The son of Cush, The Son of Ham, The Son of Noah

Targum of Jonathan (ancient Jewish commentary) interprets the phrase MIGHTY HUNTER to be MIGHTY REBEL AGAINST GOD.

Nimrod's purpose was to unite the people against God.

Seducing Spirits and Doctrines of Devils

The woman will agin be built a house in Babylon

Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth. -- Zec 5:5 (KJV)

Babylon must be rebuilt !

Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. -- Jer 50:13 (KJV)

There were Jews living in Babylon in A.D. 25 and Peter wrote his epistle in Babylon around A.D. 60

The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son. -- 1 Pet 5:13 (KJV)

Around the middle of the 5th century Theodoret speaks of Babylon as being inhabited by Jews and there were three Jewish universities at Babylon. From out of these universities coomes forth the world recognized Babylonian Jewish Talmud.

A.D. 917 Ibu Hankel mentions Babylon as an insignificant village but still in existence.

1100 A.D. Babylon had grown into a town of somewaht importance. It was known as the town of the two mosques.

After 1100 it was enlarged, fortified, and renamedas Hillah or Rest. In 1898 Hillah contained at least 10,000 inhabitants, and was surrounded by fertile lands and abundant date groves stretched along the banks of the Euphrates.

Prophetic doom of Babylon has never been fulfilled.

It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. -- Isa 13:20 (KJV)

Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth any son of man pass thereby. -- Jer 51:43 (KJV)

WHEN IS BABYLON TO BE DESTROYED ?

Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. -- Isa 13:9 (KJV)

For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. -- Isa 13:10 (KJV)

HOW IS BABYLON TO BE DESTROYED ?

Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. -- Rev 18:8 (KJV)

And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, -- Rev 18:9 (KJV)

BABYLON TO BE DESTROYED IN 1 HOUR

And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. -- Rev 18:19 (KJV)

And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. -- Rev 18:21 (KJV)

As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. -- Jer 50:40 (KJV)

What is the significance of the man' heart ?

I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace: -- Dan 4:4 (KJV)

Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream. -- Dan 4:6 (KJV)

Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof. -- Dan 4:7 (KJV)

But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying, -- Dan 4:8 (KJV)

O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. -- Dan 4:9 (KJV)

Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: -- Dan 4:15 (KJV)

Was there a dual fulfillment of prophecy here ????

First judgement began with Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian Captivity (606 B.C.)

According to prophecy, the final Babylonian kingdom would be postponed to allow for the seven more times to pass over

Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: -- Dan 4:15 (KJV)

According to the Babylonian myths,

The great god, once stripped of his power and cut down almost to the ground will one day spring back to life.

Here we see the great serpent being the symbol of resurrection as is all to common with the image of Aesculapius who is generally represented with a stick or branch of a tree at his side having a serpent twining around it. The tree is to once again sprout back to new life. It is very common throughout the myths of the world and their religions.
